What to expect

Vysehrad fortress and legends

This historic fort overlooks Prague and is often described as the city’s hidden gem, with a peaceful atmosphere compared to the busier center. Your guide leads you through its grounds while sharing Czech legends, myths, and national history connected to Vysehrad.

Features

• Vysehrad is introduced as a fortress with a history that spans over a thousand years, and your guide uses the surroundings to bring Czech folklore and national stories to life.
• A small-group setting of up to 11 guests per guide keeps the pace manageable and allows time for questions about Vysehrad’s role in Prague’s past.
• The included tram ticket to Vysehrad covers the short ride up to the fortress area, so you arrive together and can focus on the guided route from the moment you step off.

Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul

At the heart of Vysehrad stands the neo-Gothic Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, one of the site’s most recognizable landmarks. The visit focuses on its architecture and its importance within the Vysehrad complex.

Features

• Entry to the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul is included, so your group can step inside this neo-Gothic church and take in its detailed interior as part of the guided visit.
• Your guide explains how the basilica fits into Vysehrad’s long history, connecting its current appearance with the stories and periods you encounter around the fortress.
• Time inside the basilica is structured so you can absorb your surroundings without rushing, with your guide on hand to point out key features that relate to Vysehrad’s past.

Rotunda of St. Martin

The Rotunda of St. Martin is another key stop inside the Vysehrad area and is one of the iconic landmarks referenced in the tour. It represents an older layer of the site’s history and contrasts with the neo-Gothic basilica.

Features

• As you view the Rotunda of St. Martin from the outside, your guide discusses its place among Vysehrad’s earliest structures and how it has survived within the fortress landscape.
• The stop at the rotunda is used to deepen the stories of Czech legends and myths, linking its simple form to the longer narrative of the site’s development.
• This visit to the Rotunda of St. Martin is part of the combined route that also includes the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul and the Czech National Cemetery, so you see how the main landmarks relate to each other spatially.

Czech National Cemetery

Within the Vysehrad grounds, you visit the Czech National Cemetery, which adds another layer to the story of the site. It reflects how Vysehrad is tied to national memory as well as to legends and architecture.

Features

• The Czech National Cemetery is presented as a place of national significance, and your guide continues the narrative of Czech history and identity while you walk through this area.
• Including the cemetery in the tour rounds out the trio of key stops, alongside the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul and the Rotunda of St. Martin, so you experience Vysehrad as both a fortress and a symbolic site.
• The visit here is part of the standard guided tour route and is led by your expert English-speaking guide, who adjusts the commentary to keep the atmosphere appropriate to the surroundings.

Local drink break

At an appropriate point in the visit, you pause to enjoy a drink, giving you time to absorb what you have seen and ask further questions. This short break fits naturally into the walking route around the fortress.

Features

• One drink is included in the tour price, with a choice of coffee, local brews, local brews, or a soft drink, so you can sit or stand with the group while continuing the conversation with your guide.
• The drink break is used to reflect on Vysehrad’s hidden-gem character just 10 minutes from the city center and to clarify any details from the legends and history you have heard.
• Since the beverage is already covered, you do not need to handle separate payment during this pause, keeping the focus on the experience and your time at Vysehrad.
