Tokyo Tower: The Origin of Tokyo; WW2 History, Religion & Architecture

Your experience

Discover Tokyo’s origins and transformation on a guided walking tour that explores the city’s history, religious traditions, political landscape, and distinctive architecture. Over two hours, visit seven stops around Shiba and Azabudai to understand how historical events and changing beliefs helped shape Japan’s capital.

Getting started

Meet your guide in front of the large gate of Zojoji Daimon, approximately 50m from Exit A6 of Daimon Station, across the street from FamilyMart. Look for the orange flag to identify your guide before setting off on the walking tour. From here, begin exploring the neighbourhood’s historic landmarks and the stories behind Tokyo’s evolution.

What to expect

• Your first stops introduce you to the city’s religious heritage and historic landscape. At Zojoji Temple, learn about the role of Buddhist traditions in Japanese history, followed by a walk through Shiba Park, where green spaces sit alongside some of the capital’s important landmarks. Continue to Shiba Toshogu, a shrine that offers further insight into Japan’s religious practices and historical legacy.
• The route then brings you to Tokyo Tower, one of the city’s most recognisable structures. Explore how Tokyo’s skyline developed and discover the architectural choices that distinguish its older landmarks from its modern buildings. Your guide connects the city’s physical transformation with the events that shaped it, including the devastating fires and wartime bombing that led to major periods of rebuilding.
• At Reiyukai Shakaden Temple, examine another dimension of Japan’s religious landscape and learn about the relationship between faith, society, and the state. The discussion also touches on Japan’s modern political environment and the complex connections between religious institutions and public life.
• The final stops take you towards Azabudai Hills, a contemporary urban development that reflects Tokyo’s continuing architectural transformation. Along the way, consider how the city balances its historical identity with ambitious modern design.

By the end of the tour, you’ll have a broader understanding of the history, religion, politics, and architecture behind Tokyo’s distinctive character.
