Your Experience

Explore Melbourne’s central laneways on a 2-hour walking guided tour with two coffees and an expert local guide.

Getting started

Start your walking guided tour at 9:00am from Federation Square, where you meet your experienced local guide and the rest of your group. After a short orientation, you set off on foot toward Melbourne’s nearby laneways. The route runs for about 2 hours and finishes back at Federation Square, so comfortable clothing and suitable shoes are recommended.

What to expect

Degraves Street

This busy pedestrian strip is one of central Melbourne’s best-known cafe streets and forms an early stop on your route.

Features

• Your expert guide introduces Degraves Street as a starting point for Melbourne’s coffee obsession, pointing out the compact cafes that line the narrow roadway.
• One of your two coffees throughout the tour is typically enjoyed here, giving you a chance to sip as you hear how cafe culture helped shape the city’s laneway life.
• Your guide takes photos as you explore, and Degraves Street often features as a backdrop in the set of images provided to you post-tour.

Centre Place

A short walk away, Centre Place is a tight, graffiti-lined laneway filled with small eateries and local hangouts.

Features

• Here you see how Centre Place differs from nearby streets, with its dense mix of signs, tiny counters, and layered street detail.
• Your professional guide explains how spaces like Centre Place evolved from service alleys into some of Melbourne’s most recognisable walkways.
• Photos taken by your guide capture the textures and angles of Centre Place, which you receive after the tour as a digital keepsake.

AC/DC Lane

Named after the Australian rock band, AC/DC Lane is dedicated to large-scale murals and wall pieces.

Features

• Walking into AC/DC Lane, you are surrounded by street art, with walls covered in colour, lettering, and band-inspired imagery.
• Your guide highlights how official recognition and street art rules have changed the look and feel of AC/DC Lane over time.
• This stop gives you another opportunity for guide-taken photos against the artwork, later shared with you after the tour.

Block Arcade

Block Arcade is an elegant late-19th-century shopping arcade that contrasts strongly with the raw brick laneways outside.

Features

• Inside Block Arcade, you walk beneath its detailed interior, seeing how a covered arcade was once central to Melbourne city life.
• Your guide uses this stop to connect hidden city history with the more polished side of central Melbourne’s retail past.
• As you move through the arcade, your guide continues capturing moments, adding indoor shots to the post-tour photo collection.

Hosier Lane

Hosier Lane is one of Melbourne’s most visited street art sites and a key highlight of the walking route.

Features

• Entering Hosier Lane, you see walls filled with changing street art, from stencils to large-scale painted works.
• Your guide explains how Hosier Lane became a focal point for street art in Melbourne and why its appearance shifts so often.
• This is a prime spot for your guide to take more photos of your group that are later provided to you after the tour.

Chinatown

Melbourne’s Chinatown, just a few blocks from the main laneway network, sits at the heart of the city’s migration story.

Features

• You walk under Chinatown’s arches and along its central spine while your guide shares stories of migration and reinvention linked to this neighbourhood.
• The visit helps place the laneways in the wider context of how different communities shaped the city you are walking through.
• Photos taken here add another layer to your post-tour images, showing a different style of street and signage.

Pellegrini’s espresso bar

Near the end of the route, you pause outside Pellegrini’s espresso bar, often described as Melbourne’s original espresso bar.

Features

• Stopping outside Pellegrini’s espresso bar, you hear how this venue contributed to establishing espresso culture in Melbourne.
• Your second coffee option is usually linked to this later stage of the tour, giving you the chance to reflect on how espresso bars changed local habits.
• Your guide may take a final round of photos near Pellegrini’s, all of which are compiled and shared with you after the walking tour.

Wrapping up

The experience concludes back at Federation Square, where your guide signs off, reminds you that bag storage is not available through the tour, and tells you how and when you will receive the photos provided post-tour by your guide so you can revisit each stop later.
