What to expect

Central Christchurch walking route

This up to 90-minute guided walking tour stays within central Christchurch, moving from the historic core to the modern rebuild areas. The route has been designed so you can cover key landmarks and public spaces at a steady pace within a tight schedule.

Features

• A local guide leads the guided walking tour of central Christchurch, sharing stories, history, and hidden details that connect what you see in the streets with the city’s wider past and present.
• Along the way, you visit some of the city's most significant landmarks and public spaces, including views of ChristChurch Cathedral and the innovative cardboard-tube cathedral only minutes apart.
• Insights into Christchurch history include clear explanations of the 2010–2011 earthquakes and the city’s recovery, so damaged sites and new builds you pass gain context rather than being just background.
• Architectural heritage sits alongside the new rebuild, and your guide points out how older structures, the historic heart, and modern design fit together across key landmarks and central streets.

New Regent Street and gelato stop

Pastel New Regent Street is a highlight of the route and a natural place to pause near the end of the experience. Here, you see one of Christchurch's most recognisable streetscapes and enjoy a sweet break.

Features

• On New Regent Street, you receive a scoop of Rollickin' gelato, with classic New Zealand flavours such as hokey pokey or lolly cake available so you can taste something distinctly local.
• Time here lets you observe how this characterful street fits into the changing face of Christchurch, from pre-quake heritage shopfronts to the surrounding modern rebuild areas and public spaces.
• Your guide continues to share insights into how central Christchurch has evolved, tying together the landmarks you have seen, the impact of the earthquakes, and the recovery work that shapes the city today.

Wrapping up

The tour concludes back in central Christchurch after you finish your included gelato, leaving you well placed to keep exploring nearby landmarks independently; entry to ChristChurch Cathedral is not included, so you are free to plan a separate visit if you wish.
